Welcome to the Little Hoosic Watershed Association website!

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Association is to promote soil conservation and flood control and prevention in the area drained by the Little Hoosic River and its tributaries.

The Little Hoosic Watershed is the area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into the Little Hoosic River. The Watershed encompasses 47,519 acres. The southern boundary is at Cherry Plain and the northern edge is in North Petersburgh. Click here to see a map of the watershed.

WHAT WE DO

Site Visits

Board members of the Little Hoosic Watershed Association are available to provide information to people who own land in the Little Hoosic Watershed and are considering work that affects the river or the riverbank. We can assist you in understanding the regulations that affect work in the river and on the riverbank, by answering questions and providing resources for learning more. At your request, board members will come to meet with you and make suggestions. There is no fee or obligation for this service. Contact us to arrange a visit.

Inspections

Following major flooding in the river in the 1950s, a series of structures were built in an effort to slow down the rate of water during flood events. Most of the structures are in the town of Berlin. The Association conducts annual inspections of the structures to keep the Rensselaer County Soil and Water Conservation Service and other governmental agencies apprised of conditions. Click here to see a map showing locations of the structures. Click here for inspection results.

The Association has recently started an initiative to inspect the entire length of the river. Keeping track of problem spots can lead to proactive solutions to help alleviate erosion. We will post updates as they are available.

Join Us
We hope that you will consider joining our organization. Any person living in or owning land in the Little Hoosic Watershed is eligible for voting membership and anyone interested in the Association can be an Associate member. Membership dues are still only $1 a year!
